11 injured in US nuclear submarine underwater collision
Washington, Oct 8 (EFE).- The USS Connecticut, one of the most advanced nuclear-powered submarines of the US Navy, has suffered an underwater collision while sailing in the Indo-Pacific region, leaving at least 11 sailors injured.
The US Navy confirmed the accident in a statement, saying none of the crew members suffered life-threatening injuries.
The navy did not specify the day and the place where the submarine suffered the collision and what hit it.
However, the Navy Times, citing unnamed officials, said the number of injured in the Oct.2 accident was 11.
The Times said the deployed fast-attack submarine Connecticut “struck an object” while submerged in the Indo-Pacific region.
The niche military news portal said an official, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the record, said that “the area’s topography at the time did not indicate there was a land mass in front of the boat.”
“There are also no indications that the mishap was hostile or that the sub collided with another vessel,” it said, citing the official.
The Times said two crew members suffered moderate injuries, and no one required evacuation from the boat.
The official declined to provide a total number of sailors injured but described the injuries as “bumps, bruises, and lacerations.”
The ship will arrive in Guam on Friday, the official said.
The US Navy said, in its statement, that the “submarine remains in a safe and stable condition.”
“USS Connecticut’s nuclear propulsion plant and spaces were not affected and remain fully operational.” EFE
