Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey sets half marathon WR in Valencia

Valencia, Spain, Oct 24 (EFE).- Ethiopian athlete Letesenbet Gidey on Sunday smashed the women’s half marathon world record with a time of 1:02:52 at the the Valencia Trinidad Alfonso EDP race in eastern Spain.

She brought the record down by 70 seconds from the previous time set by Ruth Chepngetich in April.

For Gidey, 23, the half marathon was her fourth world record, having already set the fastest times in the 5,000, 10,000 and 15,000m.

The women’s half marathon in Valencia got off to a rapid start.

A record looked almost certain to be on the cards by the halfway point, which Gidey hit one minute ahead of the former WR.

Fellow Ethiopian Yalemzerf Yehualaw took second place while the men’s race was won by Kenyan Abel Kipchumba with a time of 58:07.EFE
