Cannes Film Festival: Hollywood stars, Cronenberg’s return mark 75th edition

Cannes, France, May 17 (EFE).- After two years of the Covid-19 pandemic, the 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival returns on Tuesday to the French riviera in its traditional form.

This year’s red carpet will host an array of Hollywood stars including Tom Cruise, Forest Whitaker, Tilda Swinton, Idris Elba, Michelle Williams, Marion Cotillard, Anne Hathaway and Anthony Hopkins among others.

Cruise will receive a tribute to coincide with the worldwide release of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ while Whitaker is set to be presented with the Palme d’Or Honorary Award for his career that includes films ‘The Last King of Scotland’, ‘Bird’ and ‘Good Morning, Vietnam’.

Previous winners of the Palme d’Or competing for the top prize this year are Japan’s Hirokazu Kore-eda, Belgian filmmaking duo the Dardenne brothers, Swede Ruben Östlund and Romanian Cristian Mungiu.

Among the highlights most eagerly awaited is David Cronenberg’s first film in eight years, which is expected to drive viewers out of the theaters due to its strong content.

With his latest horror sci-fi movie, ‘Crimes of the Future’, Cronenberg returns to his horror roots with Viggo Mortensen and Léa Seydoux playing surgical artists who show the metamorphosis of human organs in avant-garde performances.

Of the 21 films competing for the Palme d’Or only five are directed by women and include veterans such as Claire Denis and Kelly Reichardt.

Actor Vincent Lindon will be the first Frenchman to preside over the official jury since 2009.

He will be joined by Swedish actress Noomi Rapace, Indian Deepika Padukone, British actress and director Rebecca Hall and Italian Jasmine Trinca, as well as Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, French Ladj Ly, American Jeff Nichols and Norwegian Joachim Trier.

In a bid to attract younger audiences, this year’s edition has teamed up with Chinese social network TikTok and will offer red carpet, interviews and other exclusive content to users. EFE
