Russian parliament raises age limit for military service by five years

Moscow, Jul 18 (EFE).- The Lower House of the Russian parliament or State Duma on Tuesday approved a bill in its third and final reading that increases the age limit of military persons for being in the reserve by five years.

“The State Duma adopted in the third reading a law that raises the age limit for certain citizens with military ranks (for conscripts in the reserve) by five years,” the State Duma said on its news portal.

The new amendments, which would be applicable in three categories of military personnel, will be implemented in a gradual manner in a transitional period between 2024 and 2028.

According to the State Duma, these amendments would apply to soldiers, sailors, sergeants, noncommissioned officers, warrant officers, and midshipmen.

As per the new bill, the age limit for such persons liable for military service belonging to the first category was increased from 35 to 40 years, for the second category from 45 to 50 years and for the third category from 50 to 55 years.

The amendments also provide for the possibility of signing military contracts with foreign citizens up to 52 years of age including those living in a third country as permanent residents.

After the military invasion of Ukraine, Russia has been taking measures to increase the number of its military personnel by offering attractive service contracts and recruiting volunteers to serve in its armed forces. EFE
