Liverpool put pressure on Man City with win over Arsenal

Sports Desk, Mar 16 (EFE).- Only a point separates Liverpool from Premier League leaders Manchester City after the Reds’ 2-0 result Wednesday against fourth-place Arsenal.

Jürgen Klopp’s men extended their league winning streak to nine matches, while Mikel Arteta’s Gunners saw their run of consecutive victories end after five.

Only a fine save by Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale prevented Virgil van Dijk from putting the visitors ahead in the 2nd minute, but the hosts had more of the ball from then until the final seconds before the break, when Liverpool’s Sadio Mane fired over the cross-bar.

Mane put the ball past Ramsdale early in the second half, but the goal was disallowed for offside and the action shifted to the other end, where Alisson was tested by Martin Odegaard before comfortably handling a shot from Bukayo Saka.

Diogo Jota broke the deadlock in the 54th minute with a strike that seemed to catch Ramsdale and the Arsenal back line by surprise.

The second goal came in the 62nd minute from Roberto Firmino, who scored just six minutes after entering the game as a sub.

Arsenal’s best opportunity fell to Gabriel Martinelli, who fired just wide in the 88th minute. EFE apa/dr
