Everton get council approval to leave Goodison Park, its stadium since 1892
London, Feb 23 (efe-epa).- Everton’s plans to leave Goodison Park and move to a new stadium have been approved by Liverpool City Council, the club announced on Tuesday.
The 52,000-seater new stadium, located in the port area of the city, will be ready by 2023, according to the club’s plans. The move is worth 500 million pounds and will create 15,000 jobs.
The historical Goodison Park, Everton’s home ground since 1892, will be converted into affordable housing, a hospital and a shopping center.
The project was approved despite opposition from Historic England, which claimed it would affect the city’s historical legacy.
The approval represents “just one more step in our long journey” on the path towards a new stadium, Everton president Bill Kenwright said afterwards.
A decision to give the final green light falls to the United Kingdom’s government. EFE-EPA
