Ex-Bolivian leader Morales sees little change in US policy under Biden

Cochabamba, Bolivia, Feb 13 (efe-epa).- Former Bolivian President Evo Morales says he expects there to be few structural changes in United States policy as a result of Joe Biden taking over from Donald Trump in the White House.

In an exclusive interview with Efe, the left-wing politician gave his opinion on what kind of future relationship Bolivia can expect with the new US president.

Morales said: “Although racist, fascist capitalism has come to an end, classist capitalism has returned. For me, there is no democracy in the US, people in the US vote, they have suffrage, but neither the Republicans nor the Democrats govern, the multinationals do.

“That’s its politics and it won’t change a bit. Now (there will be) some social programs, like with (Barack) Obama, the topic of health, some small things maybe with migration but, in the end, economic policies won’t change.

“In the United States, they believe they have a God-given right to dominate the world, that planetary sovereignty is theirs.

Morales left Bolivia amid political turmoil in the wake of elections in 2019, something he regards as part of a right-wing coup. He had led the country for 14 years, implementing left-wing policies.

“When I went to Cuba, it was not for health reasons, it was for a meeting with Cuba and Venezuela, a high-level meeting on how to return to democracy (in Bolivia),” he said of a trip he made during his exile.

He returned to Bolivia following the victory of fellow Movement for Socialism (MAS) figure Luis Arce in the elections of November 2020.

Asked what state he found his country and party in when he returned to Bolivia from Argentina 90 days ago, Morales said: “Bolivia is destroyed economically, firstly because of the de facto government (that came to power after he resigned) and secondly because of the pandemic, I say that in all honesty.
