Porsche driver who filmed dying police officers sentenced in Melbourne

Sydney, Australia, Apr 28 (EFE).- An Australian man who filmed four dead and dying police officers after a highway crash in Melbourne last year was sentenced to 10 months in prison on Wednesday.

On Apr. 22, 2020, Richard Pusey was pulled over by police on the Eastern Freeway for speeding in his Porsche when a truck plowed into the emergency lane. Four police officers died.

According to accounts of the events, Pusey, who avoided injury as he was urinating off the side of the road, failed to help the officers and instead filmed the scene.

The 42-year-old pleaded guilty to outraging public decency, drug possession, reckless conduct endangering serious injury and speeding.

In his ruling, Victoria County Court Judge Trevor Wraight said Pusey’s actions were “heartless, cruel and disgraceful.”

“A normal human reaction … would likely be to immediately telephone triple zero. What you did, however, was film the scene with a running commentary,” Wraight said, according to national broadcaster ABC.

However, “there is evidence of genuine remorse,” the judge said, adding that Pusey’s actions had generated “an enormous amount of public antipathy” that he was entitled to have taken into account.

Pusey, who appeared in court by video conference, was convicted and sentenced to 10 months in prison, a fine of AU$1,000 ($775), put on a two-year good behavior bond, and his license was suspended for two years.

Given that he has already spent 296 days in prison, Pusey has only days left in his sentence, although he may remain behind bars due to other pending charges. EFE
