At least 2 dead, three injured in attack on market in Afghanistan

Kabul, Aug 5 (EFE)- At least two people were killed and three others wounded in the Afghan capital on Friday in a bomb attack at a market in a residential area inhabited mainly by members of the Shia Muslim minority.

The blast, which occurred at 6.30pm local time “killed two civilians and wounded three” and was caused by explosives placed in a cart in the market, tweeted Kabul police spokesperson Khalid Zadran.

The market concerned is located in police district 6, in western Kabul, a residential area of the Shia minority, who hold multiple religious events during Islamic month of Muharram that has recently begun.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, although the extremist group Islamic State (IS) is known to frequently target this minority community.

IS considers Shias to be apostates, and has carried out several attacks against them, especially targeting places of worship such as mosques.

On Apr.21, the IS claimed responsibility for a blast on a Shia mosque that killed 12 people and injured 34 others in the middle of the holy month of Ramadan.

That same week, six other people were killed and 15 injured in an explosive attack on several schools of the Hazara Shia minority in western Kabul.

Since coming to power in August last year, the Taliban have launched several operations against the IS in various parts of the country, eager to demonstrate that its return has also brought an end to the violence in the country. EFE
