EU top diplomat urges China to play ‘more constructive’ role in Ukraine war

Nusa Dua, Indonesia, Jul 7 (EFE).- The European Union’s top diplomat on Thursday urged China to play a “more constructive” role in the war raging in Ukraine and to stop disinformation on the consequences of Russia’s invasion, ahead of the G20 foreign minister’s meeting.

In a bilateral meeting in Nusa Dua on the Bali island resort, Josep Borrell called on “China to play a more constructive role in addressing Russia’s war against Ukraine and stopping disinformation on what are the causes and the disastrous global economic consequences of Russia’s attack.”

“We support G20 Chair to find multilateral solutions to global problems – which remains as needed as ever, while Russia’s war against Ukraine shatters foundations of the rules-based order,” Borrell said Wednesday after holding a meeting with Indonesian foreign minister Ibu Rento.

Indonesia is hosting the G20 in November under the ‘recover together, recover stronger’ slogan.

The foreign ministers meeting will focus on the social and economic fallout of the pandemic but will likely be overshadowed by the war in Ukraine, which has sent “shockwaves across the global economy,” according to the European Commission.

Thursday’s meeting will see ministers address the need to maintain and revitalize multilateralism as well as broker solutions to the urgent challenges of energy and food security, the EC said.

“The EU stands by its partners to work for common solutions and tackle challenges together,” the statement added.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Borrell plans to hold a series of bilateral meetings with several foreign ministers to discuss regional and bilateral issues and the global impact of Russia’s war against Ukraine, in particular, on food security. EFE
