Century-Old Candy Maker Dinstuhl’s to Open New Downtown Memphis Shop

MEMPHIS, TN (Commercial Appeal) — Dinstuhl’s is coming home again. More than 40 years after leaving Downtown, the longtime Memphis candy shop is coming back to Main Street where its story started.

“We’re entering our 118th year in business this year,” said Rebecca Dinstuhl, whose family has been in the candy-making business for generations. “Downtown is where it all began, and we have been looking to the right opportunity to return, and we feel like this is the right time and the right place.”

The candy company’s fifth retail store is expected to open by Feb. 6 at 147 S. Main St., most recently the home of pop-up shirt dress shop Beg + Borrow. The retail shop had a six-month lease that ended in late December.

Dinstuhl’s signed a year lease for the spot early this week with the help of the Downtown Memphis Commission’s Open on Main pop-up program. The program is designed to encourage more Downtown retail. It helps businesses negotiate below-market leases to test the viability of a Downtown location without the risk of a long-term lease and market-rate rent.
