Russia says West plan to send arms to Ukraine will not resolve conflict

Geneva, Mar 3 (EFE).- The United States and the European Union’s plans to deliver lethal weapons to Ukraine would not help resolve the conflict there, Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva said on Thursday.

The remarks made by Gennady Gatilov, Russia’s permanent representative to the UN office in Geneva, came during an urgent debate held by the UN Human Rights Council at the request of Ukraine to assess the human rights situation in the country following Russia’s invasion last week.

Gatilov tried to justify the military operation in Kyiv, saying the international community had turned a blind eye to the arguments submitted by Russian president Vladimir Putin about the alleged human rights violations committed against the Russian-speaking community in Ukraine.

“The Human Rights Council had all the information it needed to correct this situation, to create conditions for the development of a democratic society and for a multicultural and multiethnic Ukraine,” he added.

Gatilov accused the US and the EU of not seeking to resolve the situation “because the peace and prosperity of Ukraine are not in your interest, the lives of ordinary Ukrainians do not matter to you.”

He also pointed out that they only want to keep the current Ukrainian government “because it represents a means of pressure and is a card in your clash with Russia.” EFE
