MEMPHIS, TN (LPL/Memphis Business Journal) — El Dr. James Downing ha establecido en St. Jude Children´s Research Hospital durante seis años y $7 mil millones un frente para combatir el cáncer a escala global.

Debido a ese trabajo y sus contribuciones como investigador y director general en el campo del cáncer pediátrico, la Sociedad Americana de Oncología Clínica (ASCO) ha seleccionado a Downing para el Premio y Conferencia de Oncología Pediátrica 2019. ASCO está honrando a Downing por su “logro excepcional, trabajo sobresaliente y dedicación en este campo y por el avance de la atención a pacientes pediátricos con cáncer”.

ASCO tiene 40.000 miembros y es una de las organizaciones profesionales más grandes para médicos que tratan el cáncer. Downing presentará su conferencia, “La patología molecular del cáncer pediátrico”, en la reunión anual de la ASCO del 2 de junio en Chicago.

MEMPHIS, TN (Memphis Business Journal) — Dr. James Downing has set St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital on a $7 billion, six-year path to combat cancer on a global scale.

Due to that work and his contributions as a researcher and CEO in the field of pediatric cancer, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) has selected Downing for its 2019 Pediatric Oncology Award and Lecture. ASCO is honoring Downing for his “exceptional achievement, outstanding work, and dedication to this field and advancing care for pediatric patients with cancer.”

ASCO has 40,000 members and is one of the largest professional organizations for physicians that treat cancer. Downing will present his lecture, “The Molecular Pathology of Pediatric Cancer,” at ASCO’s June 2 annual meeting in Chicago.

Downing headed the Pediatric Cancer Genome Project (PCGP), which launched in 2010 and sequenced the normal and cancer genomes of more than 800 young cancer patients. The results of the PCGP work have been heralded as a key medical breakthrough in genomic medicine, including discoveries on some of the most aggressive pediatric cancers and on Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Downing now leads St. Jude as its president and CEO and has made fighting pediatric cancer outside of St. Jude’s doors a priority for the hospital. His six-year strategic plan includes expanding St. Jude’s clinical care and research programs to sites around the world. That includes a $100 million investment to create St. Jude Global, a key platform to expand that care and research to low- and moderate-income countries that are home to 80 percent of childhood cancer patients.

Since 2002, Downing will be the sixth researcher at St. Jude to receive the ASCO’s Pediatric Oncology Award, including Leslie Robison, chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Cancer Control; William E. Evans, former CEO and member of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences; Mary Relling, chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences; Ching-Hon Pui, chair of the Department of Oncology; and the late Larry Kun.

“When I entered the field of hematopathology more than 30 years ago, there were many unknowns about childhood cancer, particularly why it occurs and how to best treat it,” Downing said in a release. “Since then, many strides have been made in the research and treatment of childhood cancer. I am honored to have contributed.”
