Russia breaks daily Covid deaths record for 4th day in a row

Moscow, Jul 2 (EFE).- Russia reported 679 deaths from Covid-19 on Friday, its fourth consecutive daily record of fatalities from Covid-19 since the outbreak of the pandemic, according to the country’s health authorities.

The deaths recorded in the last 24 hours brought the number of deaths caused by the new coronavirus to 136,565.

In total, 23,218 new cases of covid-19 were detected in the past day, while the number of recovered patients rose to 18,197.

Moscow and St. Petersburg, the country’s two largest cities, are the most affected by the pandemic, where 112 and 101 people died of covid in the last 24 hours, respectively.

Russia, with 5,561,360 cases, is the fifth most infected country in the world, after the United States, India, Brazil and France.

In view of the surge in cases, authorities in Moscow and in several jurisdictions in Russia have ordered compulsory vaccination for people working in high-risk sectors.

The country’s health authorities have acknowledged that 90% of the new infections are now due to the delta variant of the coronavirus.

On Thursday, the mayor of Moscow, Sergey Sobyanin, announced the start of the revaccination campaign in the Russian capital.

According to Sobyanin, under the current epidemiological conditions, it is advisable to be revaccinated every 6 months.

On Monday in Moscow, new measures came into force allowing access to restaurants, bars, cafes and mass events for people who have been fully vaccinated, those who have recovered from the disease in the last 6 months or people who present a negative PCR test. EFE
