Dozens of Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine missile strike in Donetsk region

Moscow, Jan 2 (EFE).- Over 60 Russian soldiers were killed in a Ukrainian missile strike on a Russian army barracks in Makiivka, Moscow officials said Monday.

The industrial city is in the eastern region of Donetsk, in territory that was annexed by Moscow in September.

Six US-made Himars missiles struck a temporary barracks being used by Russian military units, command spokesman Igor Konashenkov said, adding that Russian air defenses shot down two of the six rockets.

“As a result of the impact of four missiles (…) 63 Russian servicemen were killed,” the defense ministry said.

“The families and relatives of the deceased servicemen will receive all necessary assistance and support,” the Russian command added.

Ukrainian sources said the casualty toll was significantly higher than Russia was claiming, however, with the Ukrainian command noting that “Santa Claus packed 400 Russian pig carcasses,” in addition to more than 300 wounded in the attack.EFE
