Iranian nuclear power plant restarts operations after 2 week closure
Tehran, Jul 5 (EFE).- Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant has resumed operations after being shut down for technical reasons for two weeks, the country’s Atomic Energy Organization (AEOI) confirmed on Monday.
AEOI deputy head Mahmoud Jafari said that the technical defect that led the power plant to go off the grid on June 21 has been resolved.
It is expected that Bushehr’s reconnection to the grid could help reduce the serious power cuts Iran has been experiencing recently, similar to those that took place at the end of May.
Many neighborhoods in Tehran are experiencing repeated daily blackouts that last more than six hours.
The 1,000-megawatt reactor, located in the south of the country, began operations in 2011.
In 2014, Russia signed a cooperation agreement with Iran to help build the second and third Bushehr reactors, which are scheduled to be inaugurated in 2024 and 2026 respectively.
Iran is involved in ongoing negotiations with the United Kingdom, France, Russia, China, and Germany in the Austrian capital to salvage the 2015 nuclear deal, of which the United States has unilaterally pulled out of in 2018.
The talks kicked off on April 2, with the United States taking part indirectly through mediators.EFE
