Malaysia, Singapore to reopen one of world’s busiest borders next month

Bangkok, Jul 14 (efe-epa).- Malaysia and Singapore will reopen business travel next month allowing people to cross one of the busiest border crossings in the world for the first time in months, authorities announced on Tuesday.

Before the lockdown, some 450,000 people crossed the Singapore-Malaysia land border daily but it closed in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In a joint statement published on Tuesday, the Foreign Affairs Ministries of both nations said a green corridor for business commuters would be established amid regulations and preventive measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

The governments also announced travel arrangements for nationals who have long-term visas or resident permits in the other country.

Authorities will disclose the full details in late July outlining the steps of the application process, the requirements and the health protocol to follow in order to resume travel from the tentative date of 10 August.

“This will allow both parties to progressively restore cross-border people interaction and economic exchanges,” the statement signed by the two ministers, Singaporean Vivian Balakrishnan and Malaysian Hishammuddin Hussein read.

Singapore and Kuala Lumpur claim to have Covid-19 infections under control.

The city-state of Singapore has recorded over 46,000 cases since the beginning of the pandemic while Malaysia has registered 8,700. EFE-EPA
