US must take concrete action to get ties ‘back on track,’ China says

Shanghai, China, May 22 (EFE).- Chinese foreign Ministry on Monday called on the United States to take “concrete actions” to put the tenuous relations between the two countries back on track.

“We urge the US to form a correct perception of China, stop interfering in China’s internal affairs and harming China’s sovereignty, security and development interests, and work with China to bring China-US relations back to the right track with concrete actions” Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a regular press briefing in Beijing on Monday.

The statement came a day after US President Joe Biden said he was expecting the ties with China to improve in near future through diplomatic outreach.

“I think you’re going to see that (standoff) begin to thaw very shortly,” Biden said at a press conference in Hiroshima, Japan, on the sidelines of the G7 leaders’ summit.

Mao said that China and US “maintain necessary communication”, but questioned Washington’s “sincerity” over diplomatic talks.

“The US says it wants to speak to the Chinese side while seeking to suppress China through all possible means and impose sanctions on Chinese officials, institutions and companies,” she alleged.

The spokesperson called on Washington to “immediately lift sanctions” against Beijing and remove other obstacles to create a favorable atmosphere for dialog.

Already marred by mistrust over pandemic and a long-standing trade war, relations between the two global powers further deteriorated in March after Washington shot down a Chinese “spy” balloon over US airspace.

China had insisted that the balloon was a civilian weather monitoring airship, meant to carry out scientific research. EFE
