2017 Hispanic Film Festival in Memphis

El club de español y el Departamento de Lenguas y Literaturas del mundo, de la Universidad de Memphis, presentan el Festival de Cine Hispano 2017. El ciclo de cine hispano, que ha sido posible gracias al apoyo de Student Allocation Funding Events, de la Universidad de Memphis, Pragda, SPAIN arts & culture y la Secretaría de Estado de Cultura de España, exhibe cinco largometrajes latinoamericanos, de reciente producción, con el propósito de celebrar el Mes de la Herencia Hispana.
La entrada es gratuita para ver estas películas –en español con subtítulos en inglés– que se proyectarán entre el 13 de septiembre y el 9 de octubre en el teatro University Center Theater (499 University), a las 7 p.m. La primera cinta, 7 cajas, es una entretenida producción paraguaya –ya reseñada en esta columna– que recibió numerosos reconocimientos internacionales. Enseguida, el festival presenta la sátira titulada 3 bellezas, una divertida realización venezolana de gran calidad.
Algunos detalles de ambas películas se ofrecen a continuación:
– 13 de septiembre: 7 cajas (Paraguay 2012), de Juan Carlos Maneglia y Tana Schémbori.
Muchos sueñan con tener 5 minutos de fama y, para algunos, cumplir este deseo se puede volver una verdadera pesadilla. Es el año 2005 y Víctor (Celso Franco), un joven acarreador de mercancías, en el Mercado Municipal N.4 de Asunción, Paraguay, ansía tener un teléfono celular con cámara. El destino parece sonreírle a este carretillero cuando se le pide trasladar 7 misteriosos cajones a través del mercado; no obstante, a pesar de la simpleza del encargo, Víctor comienza a ser perseguido por distintas fuerzas de poder que buscan interceptar su carga.
– 18 de septiembre: 3 bellezas (Venezuela 2015), de Carlos Caridad-Montero.
Venezuela se conoce por haber acumulado más títulos de belleza que cualquier otro país en el mundo (siete ganadoras de Miss Universo, seis ganadoras de Miss Mundo, siete ganadoras de Miss Internacional y dos ganadoras de Miss Tierra). Perla (Diana Peñalver Denis) es una antigua reina de belleza que ha criado a sus dos hijas para competir, entre sí, y convertirse en “Miss República”. La mujer no muestra interés alguno respecto a la opinión de las niñas sobre su proyecto personal y tampoco manifiesta atención alguna hacia su hijo menor. Ella no se va a detener hasta cumplir su sueño, al punto de transformar la vida de su familia en una verdadera pesadilla.

The Spanish Club and the Department of World Languages and Literatures at the University of Memphis present the Hispanic Film Festival 2017. The film series, which was made possible with the support of the Student Allocation Funding Events, at The University of Memphis, Pragda, SPAIN arts & culture, and the Secretary of State for Culture of Spain, is bringing five recent Latin American feature films in order to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.
Admission to the festival is free. The movies will be in Spanish with subtitles in English, and will be screened between September 13th and October 9th in the University Center Theater (499 University), at 7 p.m. The first film, 7 Boxes, a Paraguayan thriller already reviewed in this column, received numerous international awards. Next, the series will show the movie 3 Beauties, an entertaining Venezuelan satire.

– September 13: 7 Boxes (Paraguay 2012), by Juan Carlos Maneglia y Tana Schémbori.
Many people dream of having 5 minutes of fame and, for someone, fulfilling this desire can become a real nightmare. It is 2005 and Víctor (Celso Franco), a young market hauler at the Municipal Market N.4 of Asunción, Paraguay, yearns to have a cell phone with a camera included. Fate seems to be on the side of this “carretillero” when asked to move seven mysterious boxes through the market. However, despite the simplicity of the commission, Víctor finds himself pursued by different groups seeking to intercept his load.
– September 18: 3 Beauties (Venezuela 2015), by Carlos Caridad-Montero.
Venezuela has accumulated more international pageant titles than any other country (seven Miss Universe winners, six Miss World winners, seven Miss International winners and two Miss Earth winners). Perla (Diana Peñalver Denis) is a former beauty queen who raised her two lovely daughters to compete with each other, in order to become “Miss Republic.” The woman does not show any interest in the opinion of the girls regarding her own personal project, nor does pay any attention to her youngest son. Indeed, she will not stop on her dream until transforming everyone’s lives into a real nightmare.
