Fisher-Price’s Iconic Toy Telephone Now Makes, Receives Real Phone Calls

An iconic childhood plaything has received a 21st-century upgrade, guaranteed to delight little ones while cashing in on their parents’ nostalgia.

Fischer-Price on Tuesday unveiled an updated version of its classic Chatter Telephone that, 60 years after it first debuted, is now capable of making and receiving real phone calls.

Of course, nostalgia doesn’t come cheap.

Available for pre-order exclusively at BestBuy.com, while supplies last, the Bluetooth-enabled model retails for $60, or six-times the price of the imagination-powered base model, USA Today reported.

In addition to making and receiving calls, the upgraded Chatter, which is compatible with both iOS and Android devices, can be used as a speakerphone and can be recharged, the newspaper reported.

According to Gizmodo, the updated Chatter still rolls, moves its eyes and maintains its primary-colored numbered rotary dial that spins, but now that satisfying click-click-click-click-click can dial actual phone numbers and placing the red handset onto the cradle – remember that? – ends the call.

“This updated version of the nostalgic childhood toy brings playful calls into the real world for all adults – working seamlessly with consumer’s cell phones via Bluetooth connection.”
