Pair of late goals lifts Real Madrid over Sevilla

Madrid, Oct 22 (EFE).- Real Madrid scored twice in the final 11 minutes of regulation Saturday to beat Sevilla 3-1 and remain undefeated in LaLiga.

The defending champions have 31 points, 6 better than Barcelona – with a game in hand – and 9 more than Real Sociedad, whose eight-game winning run in all competitions came to an end Saturday with a 1-0 loss at Valladolid.

Despite a horrible start to the season, Sevilla are always a formidable opponent and they entered the contest at the Santiago Bernabeu unbeaten in their last four matches under new coach Jorge Sampaoli.

The hosts grabbed the lead in the 5th minute, when Luka Modric poked the ball in from close range.

But the visitors reached the break trailing by only a goal and they pulled level less than 10 minutes into the second half on a goal by Erik Lamela.

And Sevilla were still on terms in the 79th minute when Lucas Vazquez restored the advantage for the Blancos, scoring on the counter as Vinicius Jr. picked up his second assist of the night.

Fede Valverde added an exclamation point two minutes later, beating Sevilla goalkeeper Bono with a blast from 20 yards out.

Barcelona host Athletic on Sunday, while fourth-place Atletico Madrid are away to Real Betis, currently fifth in the table. EFE jjl/dr
