Canada, Spain reaffirm support for reinforcing Nato’s eastern flank

Riga, Mar 8 (EFE).- Nato and member states Latvia, Canada and Spain on Tuesday reiterated their support for boosting security along the Alliance’s eastern flank and expressed their support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s invasion.

Nato’s secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg and the prime ministers of Latvia, Krisjanis Karins; Canada, Justin Trudeau and Spain, Pedro Sánchez, along with the defense minister of Canada, Anita Anand, jointly condemn Russian president Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine during a meeting in Adazi, in Latvia, just 120 kilometers from the Russian border.

The Latvian PM, who hosted the encounter, said his country had been reinforced by the decisions of Spain and Canada to deploy more troops to Nato’s NATO’s enhanced forward presence base in the country while announcing his government would boost military spending to 2.5% of GDP.

Stoltenberg said Putin had underestimated Ukraine’s self-defense capabilities as well as Nato’s solidarity when confronting the situation.

“Today should have been a day of celebration for women and girls in Ukraine, unfortunately Putin’s brutal aggression is forcing them to flee their country or fight for their lives, I would like to reaffirm Spain’s unwavering support for Ukraine,” Sánchez said. EFE
