Baby zebra born at zoo in Colombian city of Cali

Bogota, Nov 8 (EFE).- A baby Grant’s zebra was born early Monday at the zoo in the southwestern Colombian city of Cali and is in excellent health, officials at that animal park said in a statement.

The new member of that species, the smallest of the six subspecies of the plains zebra and the most common, is the offspring of a first-time mother and a male that were part of a group of four zebras brought to that zoo in 2019.

It is still unclear if the newborn is a male or a female.

“Life is cause for celebration, and today all members of the Cali Zoo are celebrating the birth of a healthy and beautiful Grant’s zebra (Equus quagga boehmi),” the statement read.

“Today, after two years, our (zebra) family has grown with the arrival of its fifth member,” the Cali Zoo said, adding that the foal is in excellent health and already running around.

The zoo, located in municipal woodlands on the banks of the Cali River and home to more than 200 animal species, said the mother will feed her foal until the young zebra is able to graze on its own.

Grant’s zebras are native to the savannas of southern and central Africa and are listed as near threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). EFE
