MEMPHIS, TN (Commercial Appeal) —The former Commercial Appeal building at 495 Union Ave. will be Memphis’ second COVID-19 overflow hospital, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland confirmed Monday.
That building, which the paper vacated last year, will join the vacant retail space at Gateway Shopping Center as the overflow space provided to Memphis and Shelby County by the expertise of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with state of Tennessee assistance. Gov. Bill Lee announced the Gateway site two weeks ago.
Strickland said the CA building will be the primary hospital used and the shopping center on Jackson Avenue would be the secondary facility. Officials had been waiting to make the announcement for more than a week. A city official said the city has indicated to the state that it would like work to begin at CA site first.
The former CA building is large, and is close to several of the area’s largest hospitals, including Methodist University and Regional One Health. That proximity would allow patients to be shuffled with relative ease between the non-acute facility at the CA site and the intensive care and negative pressure room capacity in the medical district.
