WMC 5, CA and NAACP Cancel Debate After Herenton and Strickland Decline Invitation

MEMPHIS, TN (Commercial Appeal) — WMC Action News 5 and The Commercial Appeal cancelled their planned Sept. 19 Memphis mayoral debate after former Mayor Willie Herenton and Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland declined to participate.

Shelby County Commissioner Tami Sawyer and businessman Lemichael D. Wilson had committed to the debate.

Strickland, the incumbent with a major fundraising advantage, declined, in part, because Herenton wouldn’t be there.

“We have been working with The Commercial Appeal, WMC TV 5 and the NAACP for weeks to make this happen, but without the top challenger in the race participating, an informed and balanced debate could not happen,” said Steven Reid, Strickland’s campaign consultant.

Herenton skipped all of the debates in 2007, citing his experience during the 1999 mayoral election when he debated 14 challengers.

The joint debate among WMC, The CA and the NAACP had a fundraising threshold of $30,000, which only Sawyer, Strickland, Herenton and Wilson met.

“It’s unfortunate that the citizens won’t have an opportunity to engage with mayoral candidates in order to share their concerns or to hear the candidates’ visions to address their concerns,” said Wilson.

Sawyer said, “By refusing debate — no matter the circumstances — Mayor Strickland and Herenton are denying taxpayers the right hear where we all stand on the issues and make an informed choice on who will lead our city over the next (four) years.”

“I regret that we have to cancel the mayoral debate,” said Mark Russell, executive editor of The Commercial Appeal. “With two of the four candidates who met our fundraising criteria having declined our invitation, the partners determined that we could not have a comprehensive debate on the issues.”

The other partners for the cancelled debate were the League of Women Voters of Memphis and Shelby County and the University of Memphis, which had planned to host the event.
