At least 12 dead in coal mine collapse in Pakistan

Islamabad, Mar 20 (EFE).- At least 12 people died in a coal mine collapse in southern Pakistan,, while eight people were rescued from the site, officials said Wednesday.

“A mine collapsed after an explosion, caused by pressure differences of several gases, after which 12 miners died and eight others have been rescued,” an officer of the police control room of the city of Quetta, Muhammed Ramzan, told EFE.

The incident took place on Tuesday night, with the workers outside the mine starting the rescue efforts, until the teams of the provincial disaster management authority of Balochistan arrived.

The rescue efforts were concluded on Wednesday.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in a statement expressed grief at the loss of lives.

Pakistan has significant coal reserves and numerous mines, but the precarious conditions and lax safety measures make them prone to accidents.

In November 2022, at least nine workers were killed in an explosion caused by the accumulation of methane gas at a mine in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. EFE
