British health secretary tests positive for Covid

London, Jul 17 (EFE).- British Health Minister Sajid Javid said Saturday that he has tested positive for Covid-19 despite having received both doses of the vaccine.

In a video posted to his Twitter account, Javid says he started feeling “groggy” last night, so he took an antigen test this morning which came back positive. The British government’s guidelines advise people to get a PCR test if they experience symptoms.

Javid is now self-isolating at home while he awaits the results of a PCR test.

“I’m grateful that I have had two jabs of the vaccine and my symptoms are very mild,” said Javid, who urged the population to “get out there and get (the jabs) as soon as you can.”

“If everyone plays their part, you’re not only protecting yourself and your loved ones, but you’re also safeguarding the NHS and helping to preserve our way of life,” he said.

Javid’s announcement comes with coronavirus infections in the UK exceeding 50,000 cases per day, the highest rate since January 15.

Even though the number of infections continues to rise and more than 30 percent of the British population has yet to be fully vaccinated, the British government is going ahead with its plans to lift the last remaining restrictions in place to curb the spread of the pandemic from Monday. EFE
