Fosters Needed at Memphis Animal Shelter

Memphis Animal Services, the city’s animal shelter, needs foster families to help save the dogs and cats in their care. A foster home is a temporary living situation for pets while they are awaiting placement in a permanent home or another shelter or rescue organization. Foster families provide shelter, food, care and love, but the shelter provides families with all needed supplies. There are several different ways pet lovers can foster, and the great news is that every one of them saves lives!
For dog people, MAS has two different opportunities: short-term transport fosters and more open-ended general fosters. What’s the difference? Transport foster parents keep a dog in their home until the dog is scheduled to go on a transport to another shelter – typically 1-3 weeks. General foster parents have a more open-ended timeline because they may keep a pet until they get adopted (but they don’t have to). MAS asks their general fosters to get involved in the adoption process, by taking photos and videos of their foster dog, letting their friends and family know about them, and interviewing potential adopters.
For cat people, MAS has three urgent foster needs: newborn orphaned kittens, who must be bottle-fed every 2-3 hours until about 5 weeks old; “toddler” kittens, who are eating on their own and just need a place to play; and nursing moms, who need a quiet, calm spot to raise their babies until they’re weaned.

Los padres de acogida general tienen un cronograma más abierto porque, si así lo desean, pueden quedarse con el perro hasta que éste sea adoptado. MAS les pide a sus cuidadores temporales (o de acogida general) de mascotas que se involucren en el proceso de la adopción, tomando fotos y videos del perro, informando a sus amigos y familiares sobre el animal y entrevistando a los posibles padres adoptivos.
Para los amantes de los gatos, MAS tiene tres necesidades de acogida urgentes: cuidadores de gatitos huérfanos recién nacidos, que deben ser alimentados con biberón cada 2-3 horas hasta las 5 semanas de edad; cuidadores de gatitos “pequeños”, que comen solos y necesitan un lugar para jugar; y cuidadores de madres lactantes, que necesitan un lugar cómodo, limpio y tranquilo para criar a sus bebés hasta que estos sean destetados.
