James Bond star, Sean Connery, dies age 90

London, Oct 31 (efe-epa).- Legendary British actor Sir Sean Connery, best known for his performances as James Bond, has died at the age of 90, his family said on Saturday.

His only son, actor Jason Connery, told the BBC that his father had been “unwell for some time” and died during the night with his family in Nassau, Bahamas.

“A sad day for all who knew and loved my dad and a sad loss for all people around the world who enjoyed the wonderful gift he had as an actor,” he said.

Connery, born in Edinburgh in 1930, was one of cinema’s most recognizable faces, having played the world’s best-known secret agent, 007, six times during the 1960s and 1970s.

That role catapulted the actor to global stardom as he became one of the icons of masculinity in the second half of the 20th century.

He starred in some of the most memorable adventure films of the ‘70s, from the explorer who starred alongside Michael Caine in “The Man Who Would Be King” (1975) to Robin Hood in “Robin and Marian” (1976), to the epic “The Wind and the Lion” (1975).

After a string of appearances in action films, Connery starred in several box office hits in the late 1980s.

His performance as a tough, veteran cop in the film “The Untouchables” gave him his only Oscar, for best supporting actor, in 1987.

In addition to that movie, other roles such as that of Harrison Ford’s father in “Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade” (1989), or that of a Soviet submarine captain in “The Hunt for Red October” (1990) cemented his prestige among later generations.

The son of a truck driver and a cleaner, Connery, who celebrated his 90th birthday in August, retired from acting in 2006 and from public life in 2011, to enjoy his retirement in the Bahamas.
