Four people dead after tourist boat capsizes in Italy

Rome, May 29 (EFE).- At least four people have died after a boat carrying 20 tourists capsized on Lake Maggiore in northern Italy, rescue teams said on Monday.

Divers from Italy’s fire service worked through the night until they recovered the fourth body at a depth of 16 meters early on Monday.

According to the prosecutor’s office, the dead comprised an Israeli citizen, two Italians and the boat captain’s wife.

The boat with tourists and two Italian crew members overturned and sank near the town of Lisanza, in the Lombardy region, due to a severe storm at around 7.30 pm on Sunday.

“A storm caused a very serious accident on Lake Maggiore: a 16-meter sailboat rented by tourists capsized,” the president of the region of Lombardy, Attilio Fontana, has posted on social networks.

“Firefighters from the Milan diving team, together with the coast guard and the helicopter rescue service are working on the scene,” he added.

The majority of those on board either swam ashore between the towns of Lisanza and Piccaluga or were rescued by other boats.

Five were transferred to hospitals, while 15 others were treated on the spot.EFE
