Russia resumes shelling on Mariupol’s Azovstal steel plant

Kyiv, Apr 23 (EFE).- Russian troops have resumed their shelling of Mariupol’s Azovstal steel plant, Oleksiy Arestovych, adviser to the head of the Ukrainian presidential office announced on Saturday.

“The enemy is trying to definitively put down the resistance of the defenders of Mariupol in the Azovstal area,” he was cited by the Ukrinform news agency as saying.

“They have resumed airstrikes on the territory of the plant, on the defense zone of our troops, and are trying to carry out an assault,” he added.

Some 1,000 Ukrainian civilians and soldiers are in the Azovstal plant, including 500 wounded, according to Ukrinform.

The Ukrainian authorities called on the Russians for an urgent humanitarian corridor from the steel plant. Some 120,000 civilians remain in besieged Mariupol. EFE
