Thailand seizes almost 200 kilograms of meth stuffed inside punch bags
Bangkok Dec 23 (EFE).- Thai authorities have confiscated around 200 kilograms of methamphetamine worth at least $30 million that were hidden inside boxing punch bags on route from Bangkok to Australia, Thai police reported on Thursday.
The meth stash was busted at Bangkok’s seaport after members of the Thai customs authorities grew suspicious of a shipment of 15 punch bags on Wednesday, Patchara Anuntasilpa, general director of the Thai customs, explained during a press conference.
The powdered methamphetamine, a synthetic drug commonly known as crystal meth or ice, weighed around 193.5 kilograms and has a market value in Australia of around $32.5 million.
The drug delivery was intercepted during a joint operation between the customs departments of Thailand and Australia, who are cooperating to tackle the drug trafficking endemic throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
Meth production has increased significantly in recent years, especially in the Golden Triangle, an area where the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.EFE
