Free agent Andreas Christensen joins Barcelona on 4-year deal

Barcelona, Spain, Jul 4 (EFE).- Andreas Christensen has been confirmed as Barcelona’s second signing of the summer, the LaLiga club announced on Monday.

The Danish center-back, who left Chelsea after his contract expired last season, agreed to a four-year contract with a buyout clause of 500 million euros, the Catalan club said in a statement.

“FC Barcelona and Andreas Bødtker Christensen have reached an agreement for the player to join the Club after his contract with Chelsea FC came to an end,” it added.

The 26-year-old is expected to underpin the defensive axis of Xavi Hernández’s team, as Clement Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti are expected to leave the Camp Nou to Tottenham and Rennes respectively.

Christensen, who will be presented as a Barcelona player on Thursday, joined the Chelsea youth system in the 2012-2013 season, making his first-team debut at the age of 19.

Wanting more playing time, he went on loan to Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2015, where he secured a spot in the starting lineup.

A couple of years later, he returned to Chelsea, where he became a regular starter under several coaches who took the helm of the team.

The Danish international is Barcelona’s second signing of the summer transfer window, following Franck Kessié, who joined the club also as a free agent after his Milan contract expired. EFE
