French PM resigns ahead of cabinet reshuffle

Paris, France, May 16 (EFE).- French prime minister Jean Castex on Monday formally handed in his resignation to president Emmanuel Macron, the Élysée Palace said in a statement.

The move is part of Macron’s long-awaited cabinet reshuffle after he was re-elected for a second term last month.

Castex will remain in office until a new prime minister is appointed, the statement added.

The former mayor of the small town of Prades, near the Spanish border, was appointed prime minister in July 2020, after taking over from Édouard Philippe.

Macron had already announced that if he were re-elected, he would change the head of government for a more social, environmentalist profile and would prefer a woman to hold the post.

Labor minister Elisabeth Borne is widely expected to get the job. EFE
