Armenia says recognizing genocide is wake-up call for democracies

Moscow, May 4 (EFE).- US President Joe Biden’s recognition of the mass killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks as genocide is a wake-up call for global democracy, Armenia’s foreign minister said.

In a video interview with Efe, Ara Ayvazyan warned of the dangers of putting geopolitical interests before universal values.

Ayvazyan considered Biden’s statement on April 24 a “safety sign” for his country in view of future aggressions.

Armenians were systematically killed and persecuted by Ottomans in 1915 and 1923. Up to 1.5 million Armenians died during that time, according to estimates.

Turkey rejects categorizing the killings as genocide, saying that both Armenians and Turks were killed in civil strife that occurred when Armenians protested against the Ottoman regime.
