Fulham add to Liverpool woes with 0-1 win

Sports Desk, Mar 7 (efe-epa).- Fulham deservedly prevailed 1-0 over Liverpool on Sunday thanks to a late first half goal, handing the Premier League defending champions a sixth home defeat in a row.

The latest disappointing result piles more misery on Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp. He started with three inexperienced defenders in Neco Williams, Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips, and left forward Sadio Mane on the bench as he looked for a winning formula following just one win in the last six Premier League games, a run that has seen them suffer five defeats and score just two goals.

The changes backfired as Fulham, who controlled the first half, got the lead in the winding seconds before the break, when French midfielder Mario Lemina dispossessed Mohamed Salah on the edge of the area and fired in a powerful shot.

The goal proved to be a wake-up call for Liverpool during the second half as they dominated possession, but the home side lacked the final touch on the chances they created.

Liverpool’s Diogo Jota tried his luck, but French goalkeeper Alphonse Areola blocked his effort, while a Mane header hit the woodwork. Xherdan Shaqiri also curled wide from the edge of the box as the champions pressed for an equalizer, in vain.

This is Liverpool’s sixth consecutive Premier League defeat at Anfield, where the Reds have managed to score only once in 2021.

The defeat leaves Liverpool in seventh in the Premier League table with 43 points, four points shy of the Champions League spots, while Fulham remain in the relegation zone in the 18th spot with 26 points. EFE-EPA
