Man sentenced to nearly 4 years in prison for US Capitol assault

Washington, Dec 12 (EFE).- A man was sentenced Monday to three years and eight months in prison for attacking police officers during the January assault on the United States Capitol by followers of former President Donald Trump, in which five people died.

Devlyn Thompson was sentenced to 46 months in prison after pleading guilty on Aug. 6 to assaulting, resisting and hindering police officers while using a dangerous weapon, the Justice Department said in a statement.

Federal Judge Royce C. Lambert, of the District of Columbia Court in Washington DC, also ordered that the subject pay $ 2,000 in compensation.

The sentence exceeds the one imposed last month on Scott Fairlamb of New Jersey, the first person sentenced for assaulting a police officer during the assault on the Capitol.

Fairlamb was sentenced to three years and five months in prison, the highest sentence ever ordered against one of the defendants for that event.

“The violence that took place that day was such a blatant disregard for government institutions,” Lambert was quoted as saying by CNN.

Thompson, from Seattle, Washington, was part of a crowd that came to the Capitol and pushed and assaulted members of the Metropolitan Police and the Capitol, according to court documents.

During the assault, which took place during a joint Congress session to validate the November 2020 election results, which saw incumbent President Joe Biden prevail, he helped strip riot shields from agents who protected the legislative complex.

He used a metal baton to try to hit a can of pepper spray an officer was carrying in his hand, prevent him from spraying the assailants, the document added.

The Justice Department said more than 700 people have been arrested in almost all 50 American states since Jan. 6 over the incident, including 220 accused of attacking or obstructing law enforcement. EFE
