Depay gets a brace as Dutch pound Montenegro 4-0

Sports Desk, Sep 4 (EFE).- Memphis Depay scored twice Saturday as the Netherlands rolled 4-0 over Montenegro to go second in Group G of the European qualifiers for World Cup 2022.

With five matches in the books, Turkey lead the group on 11 points, one better than both the Netherlands and Norway, who lag behind the Dutch on goal difference.

After Wednesday’s disappointing draw with Norway in the first game of Louis van Gaal’s third stint as national team coach, the 70-year-old manager was under some pressure and Depay did his part to help.

The top summer signing for FC Barcelona created several promising chances for teammates before drawing a foul from Dusan Lagator to win a penalty.

Depay converted to make it 1-0 in the 38th minute.

Yet Montenegro, despite having very little of the ball, remained in the game until the 62nd minute, when Depay completed the double with an assist from Cody Gakpo.

Georginio Wijnaldum scored in the 70th minute and Gakpo added a fourth goal six minutes later.

Depay rounded off his man of the match performance by cheerfully posing for selfie with a fan who jumped out of the stands at Philips Stadion in Eindhoven and ran onto to the pitch. EFE
