Kin of Mexican woman found in jail cell point finger at boyfriend
Salina Cruz, Mexico, Aug 31 (EFE).- The father and sister of Abigail Hay Urrutia, a 30-year-old mother of two who died under mysterious circumstances in the municipal jail in this port city on Mexico’s southern Pacific coast called Wednesday for an investigation into the actions of her boyfriend.
The events leading to Abigail’s death are connected to “a person who is named Cleivert Espinoza, who was the boyfriend of my daughter,” Jose Luis Hay said during a protest in front of the Oaxaca state legislature.
“He initiated everything because on the 19th at 5:00 in the afternoon he came to my house with my daughter and my grandson. He left later and my daughter left, following him,” the grieving father said.
Accompanied by his daughter Margarita, Hay said that Espinoza has used influential friends to avoid his responsibility in Abigail’s death.
Cleivert’s father, according to Hay, is a security guard with contacts in the Salina Cruz police department.
Abigail was jailed on Aug. 19 for resisting police trying to detain her on suspicion of a minor offense while she was arguing with Espinoza.
Hours later, the woman was found dead in her cell and the official report said that she took her own life.
The initial autopsy concluded that the cause of death was hanging, but Hay said that Abigail had a deep wound in her neck.
Margarita Hay Urrutia told Efe that her sister was a victim of domestic violence and that she suspected Espinoza hatched a plan to get Abigail out of the way so he could gain full custody of the couple’s young son.
Oaxaca’s attorney general, Arturo Peimbert Calvo, said in an appearance before the state legislature that a judge and a police inspector are in custody in connection with Abigail Hay’s death.
Two other police officers had to be released due to lack of evidence, he said. EFE
