Greek high school students resume in-person classes

Athens, Apr 12 (EFE).- Senior high school students in Greece on Monday returned to face-to-face teaching after over five months of a partial lockdown.

Students and teachers have to take Covid-19 tests at home on Mondays and Thursdays in order to be able to go to school.

Doubts have been raised, however, about the efficacy of the self-administered tests, which can give false-negative results.

It is impossible to verify the results as the students fill out and print the certificates themselves.

The positivity rate among students stands at 0.27%, much lower than the national average of 5.95% as of Sunday.

Greek authorities ordered classes to be moved online on 7 November amid a surge in cases. In-person teaching was briefly brought back earlier this year but suspended again when Covid-19 numbers began to rise.

Non-essential businesses were permitted to open with restrictions in place throughout most of Greece two weeks ago.

The Greek government aims to move toward restoring normality next month in a bid to reopen the tourism industry.

To that end, authorities aim to speed up the vaccination campaign by moving on to the population aged between 55 and 59 years later this month.

Greece is to receive 1.1 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine this month and 2.25 million by the end of June.
