Verstappen speeds ahead, Hamilton comes second, Perez climbs on podium

Sports desk, Jun 20 (EFE).- Red Bull Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen cemented his lead in the Formula One World Championship beating Lewis Hamilton to first place on Sunday at the French Grand Prix, the seventh of the world series, held in the Paul Ricard circuit.

“The whole race we were fighting each other. I think it will be like this for the rest of the season,” the Dutch told F1 media after the race.

Mercedes’ seven-time world champion Hamilton came in second, followed by Red Bull’s Spaniard Sergio Pérez in third place.

“Congratulations to Max, he did a great job. I am happy with the result, unfortunately, I lost the position but it was still a great race. We have got to dig deep and find some pace,” Hamilton said.

Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate, Finnish Valtteri Bottas, finished fourth, speeding ahead of both McLaren drivers, Englishman Lando Norris (5) and Australian Daniel Ricciardo (6).

French driver Pierre Gasly (Alpha Tauri) took seventh place, followed by Spaniard Fernando Alonso (Alpine) in eighth, and both Aston Martin drivers, the German Sebastian Vettel (9), and Canadian Lance Stroll (10).

Verstappen currently leads the World Championship with 131 points, a 12-point lead over Hamilton.

The Red Bull team is now 37 points ahead of Mercedes, as Pérez holds third place with 84 points.

The next two races will be at home for Red Bull, at the Styrian and Austrian Grand Prix in the coming two Sundays. EFE
