Galtier confirms Saturday’s match vs Clermont will be Messi’s last for PSG

Paris, Jun 1 (EFE).- Paris Saint-Germain coach Christophe Galtier confirmed Thursday that Argentine striker Lionel Messi will play his last match for the team at the Parc des Princes this weekend.

“I have had the privilege of managing the best player in the history of football. It is a great privilege,” Galtier told a press conference ahead of PSG’s final match of the Ligue 1 season against Clermont.

“(Saturday) is his last game at the Parc des Princes and I hope he will be welcomed in the best of ways,” the French coach added.

Lionel Messi has been booed by some PSG fans in recent weeks.

Galtier said that despite “a lot being said” about Messi, the World Cup winner had been an “important” player this season for PSG, later adding that he believed the criticism the Argentine has faced this year to be “not at all justified”.

“He has always been available and at the service of the team,” Galtier said.

Messi’s last game for PSG, who were crowned champions last week after drawing against Strasbourg, will see them face Clermont on the final day of the campaign.

Messi joined the club in August 2021 on a two-season contract after leaving Barcelona, with the option of extending to a third year.

The 35-year-old footballer, seven-time Ballon d’Or and world champion with Argentina at the Qatar World Cup last year, has several offers, including from Saudi Arabia, which would reportedly be the biggest contract in the history of the sport. EFE
