Gauff defeats Stephens for maiden Grand Slam semifinals at French Open

Sports Desk, May 31 (EFE).- Coco Gauff on Tuesday defeated Sloane Stephens in straight sets to advance to her maiden Grand Slam semifinal at the French Open.

American Gauff continued her good form at Roland Garros as she got knocked out her countrywoman 7-5, 6-3 in one hour and 30 minutes reaching the last-4 without dropping a set.

The 18-year-old took control of the match as she grabbed an early 3-0 lead which set her up to serve for the set at 5-3, but she failed to get the job done.

Stephens claimed two games in a row, a service break included, to draw level at 5-5, only to lose the subsequent two games in which she barely won a point.

The 2017 US Open champion seemed to have started the second set the right way by earning a service break, but she lost six out of the subsequent seven games to seal the victory.

Gauff will take on Martina Trevisan also a major semifinal novice who axed Leylah Fernandez, the 17th seed, to become the first Italian woman to reach the French Open last-4 since Sara Errani in 2013. EFE
