Gauff, Fernandez qualify for French Open quarterfinals

Sports Desk, May 29 (EFE).- Coco Gauff and Leylah Fernandez on Sunday lived up to expectations as they rolled into the French Open quarterfinals.

US’ Coco Gauff, the 18th seed, lost her serve twice in the first set, in the third and fifth games against Elise Mertens of Belgium but she managed to come back in the subsequent games.

The 18-year-old then won eight games in a row to seal a 6-4, 6-0 victory over the 31st seed in one hour and 24 minutes to secure her second Grand Slam last-8 appearance.

Hoping to best her previous major landmark – posted at the Ronald Garros in 2021 – Gauff will take on either her countrywoman Sloane Stephens or Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann.

Fernandez, the 17th seed, dropped a set for the second match in a row, but managed to defeat Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in nearly two hours.

The victory extended the Canadian’s best French Open run, beating the 2020 campaign that saw her reach the third round on her maiden main draw appearance.

The 19-year-old, the 2021 US Open finalist, will play against Martina Trevisan, who prevailed over Aliaksandra Sasnovich 7-6, 7-5 in just under two hours. EFE
