Guinean president detained by military in coup attempt

Dakar, Sep 5 (EFE).- Guinea’s President Alpha Conde on Sunday was detained by members of the army’s special forces, the elite group commander Mamady Doumbouya announced.

In an apparent coup attempt, Doumbouya said that the military decided to annul the constitution and dissolve the government, according to a video published on social media.

The military also decided to close the land and air borders, Doumbouya added justifying the move by the socio-political and economic situation in the African country.

Although photos published by local media show the 83-year-old president surrounded by armed soldiers in what seems to be the presidential palace, the defense ministry said the attempt has been shut down.

The apparent coup attempt came after heavy gunfire was heard in central Conakry earlier this morning.

Automatic weapons fire was heard in Kaloum, the commercial and administrative district of Conakry that houses the presidential palace and numerous ministries. EFE
