German soccer club’s Christmas caroling fest returns

Berlin, Dec 23 (EFE).- After sitting silent on the night before Christmas Eve for the last two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, FC Union Berlin’s stadium was filled Friday with the sound of 28,500 voices singing Christmas carols.

The 20th edition of the Weihnachtssingens at Stadion An der Alten Forsterei in the German capital kicked off at 7:10 pm with the switching on of the floodlights and the illumination of a thousand candles.

There followed the singing of the club’s anthem before the start of the caroling proper, which featured a performance by a chorus from Berlin’s Emmy-Noether high school and the Mahlsdorf men’s choir.

Union Berlin, with its roots in the former East German, struggled financially after German reunification, but eventually found its footing and won promotion to the Bundesliga in 2019.
