Real Madrid arrives in Tiraspol for CL game vs. Sheriff

Tiraspol, Moldova, Nov 23 (EFE).- Real Madrid arrived in Tiraspol, the capital of the self-proclaimed republic of Transnistria, an unrecognised breakaway state, on Tuesday ahead of their Champions League clash against FC Sheriff.

Dozens of fans gathered to welcome the LaLiga powerhouse, chanting the players’ names as well as the club’s ambassador Roberto Carlos, as they arrived at the Russia hotel in central Tiraspol.

“I cannot believe it. I’ve been waiting all my life for this day,” Danilo, a 30-year-old Real Madrid fan, told Efe near the hotel.

The team is scheduled to visit the Sheriff facilities for a training session ahead of the presser for Wednesday’s game, which has been described by local fans as “the game of the century” for Moldovan soccer.

“We are preparing for a great festivity. We welcome Real Madrid,” Transnistria’s foreign minister Vitali Ignátiev told Efe, adding that the game would put the separatist republic on the map.

Sheriff’s fans are hopeful that their team can pull off another upset after defeating Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu 2-1 earlier in the competition, while the Merengue are looking to extend their current winning streak and take a step closer to the knockout stages. EFE
