Biden warns of global ‘Armageddon’ if Putin uses nukes in Ukraine

Washington, Oct 6 (EFE).- United States President Joe Biden warned Thursday that the world faces “Armageddon” if Russia uses nuclear weapons to try to win its war in Ukraine.

“First time since the Cuban missile crisis, we have the threat of a nuclear weapon if in fact things continue down the path they are going,” Biden said at a fundraiser organized by the Democratic Party in the state of New York.

The president said his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin is in a situation where it is difficult to find a way out – especially after the latest military setbacks in Ukraine – and that he is probably looking for solutions that will allow him to save both face and power.

Biden said he’s got to “know the guy (Putin) fairly well” and “he’s not joking when he talks about potential use of tactical nuclear weapons or biological or chemical weapons because his military is, you might say, significantly underperforming.”

Putin and his administration repeatedly threaten to use nuclear weapons in Russia’s war in Ukraine amid huge military setbacks.

“We have not faced the prospect of Armageddon since Kennedy and the Cuban missile crisis,” Biden added.

“I don’t think there’s any such thing as the ability to easily (use) a tactical nuclear weapon and not end up with Armageddon.”

During the 1962 crisis, the US under President John Kennedy and the then-Soviet Union under Nikita Khrushchev came close to using nuclear weapons after the discovery of Soviet ballistic missiles stationed in Cuba. EFE
