Gosens leads resurgent Germany 4-2 over Ronaldo’s Portugal

Sports Desk, Jun 19 (EFE).- Atalanta man Robin Gosens scored one goal and assisted on another Saturday as Germany rebounded from a flat performance in their Euro 2020 opener against France to top Portugal 4-2 in Munich.

Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo put his side ahead in the 15th minute with his first-ever goal against Germany, quieting the crowd at Allianz Arena.

But Die Mannschaft kept their focus, continuing to lay siege to Rui Patricio’s goal, and the pressure bore fruit with a pair of Portugal own goals in the 35th and 39th minutes, respectively.

The first was charged to Manchester City standout and 2020-2021 Premier League player of the season Ruben Dias, who redirected a strike from Kai Havertz. Raphael Guerreiro was the unlucky party on the second goal, deflecting Joshua Kimmich’s shot.

Havertz ultimately got his goal in the 51st minute, assisted by Gosens, who scored nine minutes later to make it 4-1 for Germany. Diogo Jota turned a Ronaldo effort into the net in the 67th to narrow the deficit.

Portugal and Germany are level on points at 3, one less than Group F leaders France, but Die Mannschaft are ahead of Cristiano’s team by virtue of prevailing head-to-head. EFE
