Athens, Oct 14 (efe-epa).- The leader of Greek neo-Nazi group Golden Dawn was jailed for 13 years on Wednesday, a week after the political party was declared a criminal organization.
Nikolaos Michaloliakos and five other high-ranking members of the group were handed the same sentence by a court in Athens.
Former Golden Dawn MP Artemis Matheopoulos was jailed for 10 years.
The court also ordered Giorgos Rupakias to serve life in prison for the murder of anti-fascist rapper Pavlos Fyssas in 2013.
It was this murder case which triggered the wider investigation into Golden Dawn.
Rupakias was handed an additional sentence of 10 years for his membership of the criminal group.
Prosecutors had requested the maximum sentence of 15 years for the party’s leaders in what was a landmark case in Greece.
Eleven former MPs were jailed for five years and 41 convicted members of the neo-Nazi group were given sentences ranging from several months to eight years in prison.
The court will have to decide whether to temporarily suspend the sentences while the defense team appeals the ruling.
The sentencing came exactly one week after an appeals court found the Golden Dawn leadership guilty of creating and running a criminal organization.
